Blood Flow Restriction Therapy

Blood flow restriction (BFR) is a physical therapy technique that uses a device to restrict blood flow to a muscle while exercising. Restricting venous blood flow back to the heart creates a metabolic stress response within working muscles to enhance strength gains. The restricted blood flow tricks the muscle into thinking it’s under a heavy load which allows larger muscle fibers to be activated without having to use heavy weights. This treatment is great for maintaining and optimizing strength following surgical intervention, when patients are not able to lift heavier weights.
